TI sells two versions of the Plus CE, and the names confuse everyone. The short version: the Python edition adds Python programming and a slightly faster chip. That is basically it.

The differences that actually matter
Python programming
This is the headline feature. The Python edition ships with a Python app that lets you write and run Python code on the calculator. The regular CE cannot do this at all.
Sounds cool — and it is, if you are learning to code. But be honest with yourself: will you really program on a tiny calculator screen when your laptop and phone run Python far better? Most students try it once and never open it again.
Speed
The Python edition has a newer, faster processor. Graphs draw a touch quicker and programs run a bit smoother. For day-to-day homework — typing in functions, doing trig, running stats — the difference is small.
Everything else is identical
Same color backlit screen. Same rechargeable battery. Same buttons, same menus, same math engine. If your teacher demonstrates something on a regular Plus CE, it works exactly the same on the Python edition, and vice versa.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the regular TI-84 Plus CE if you need a calculator for class. It handles every subject — algebra, geometry, trig, stats, calculus — and it usually costs less. This is the right choice for the vast majority of students.
Buy the Python edition only if you specifically want to tinker with Python on a calculator, or if the price difference is tiny when you shop. There is no math-class reason to pay extra for it.
Either way, do not stress about picking wrong. Both are approved for the SAT, ACT, and AP exams, and both will last you through high school and into college.
