TI-84 on Chromebook
School gave you a Chromebook, class needs a TI-84. Here is the fix.
Millions of students do homework on school-issued Chromebooks — which cannot run TI-84 software the normal way. Good news: you have solid options, starting with one that needs zero installation.
The problem, plainly stated
Chromebooks run ChromeOS, not Windows or macOS. Traditional calculator programs do not install on them. And school-issued Chromebooks are usually locked down — no installing apps, no admin access, sometimes restricted websites.
So the winning strategy is simple: use tools that live in the browser. If it runs as a website, it runs on your Chromebook, locked-down or not.
Best option: a web-based TI-84 emulator
Open a website, get a calculator. No install, no permissions, no IT ticket. Web emulators work on any Chromebook with internet — including the locked school ones, as long as the site itself is not blocked.
Our free TI-84 emulator was built with small screens in mind: big touch-friendly keys, standard, scientific, and graphing modes, plus history and a degree/radian toggle. Bookmark it and it is always one click away during homework.
Need heavy graphing for a project? The dedicated graphing calculator gives you a bigger canvas with zoom, pan, and trace.
Other options worth knowing
Chrome Web Store calculator apps
The Chrome Web Store lists several graphing calculator apps and extensions. If your school allows installs from the store, these can work offline — a nice backup for spotty wifi. Quality varies, so try the free ones first.
Android apps (on supported Chromebooks)
Newer Chromebooks run Android apps. If yours does and your school permits it, calculator apps from the Play Store are an option. But again: for locked school devices, the browser route is the reliable one.
TI's official tools
TI offers web-based tools and apps that run in browsers. They are the most "official" experience, though some features sit behind school licenses. Worth asking your teacher about before paying for anything.
What about test day?
1Open a web-based TI-84 emulator
In the Chrome browser, open our free TI-84 emulator. It needs no installation, so it works on locked school Chromebooks as long as the site itself is allowed.
2Bookmark it for homework time
Bookmark the page or pin the tab. One click and your calculator is ready — standard, scientific, and graphing modes with history and a degree/radian toggle.
3Practice the physical TI-84 workflow for test day
Chromebooks do not go into exam rooms. Use the emulator to learn the Y=, GRAPH, WINDOW, TRACE workflow, then make sure you can repeat it on an approved handheld before the SAT, ACT, or AP test.
Here is the boundary: Chromebooks do not go into SAT, ACT, or AP exam rooms. Those tests require approved handheld calculators — the TI-84 Plus family qualifies, your laptop does not.
So use the Chromebook tools for learning and homework, and make sure you are comfortable on a physical TI-84 before exam day. The button workflows transfer — practice the Y=, GRAPH, WINDOW, TRACE sequence until it is automatic. Our graphing guide walks through it.
